The name Artisans Libres is a French term for craftsman in the mid-eighteenth century who worked in France outside the guild. These people were highly skilled foreigners, many of them later becoming master ebonists.
Gregory Walsh is the founder of Artisans Libres. He has been a French polisher and antique restorer, consistently working with the finest craftspeople for 30 years. After finishing a French polishing apprenticeship in North Queensland, Australia he worked as a self-employed restorer before moving to Sydney in the mid 1980's. There he worked for Colonial Living becoming foreperson restoring important Australian furniture and superb reproductions of Australian antiques. Later he worked on European and French provincial antiques for dealers in Queen Street, Woollahra in Sydney.
In 1989 Greg moved to London and was employed in workshops which specialize in fine 18C English and Continental furniture and bespoke simulated copies as well as hand polishing entire rooms of architectural joinery.
Gregory joined Mallet Antiques, New Bond Street, London in 1995 who sell some of the world's most valued treasures. In their Mayfair workshops his skills were employed on the presentation of antiques and objet d'art using many rare and exotic materials for clients ranging from royalty to museums. This invaluable experience included restoring furniture made by Chippendale and other masters.
Artisans Libres was established in London in 2000 restoring furniture for private clients, the antique trade and supplying interior designers.
Greg is now in Cairns, Australia and brings with him a wealth of practical
and artistic talent, providing antique restoration services and reproduction
furniture to the public.
